Delivering the highest standards of store presentation is a key part of the John Lewis brand proposition. It’s one reason why they are so admired by their customers and respected within the retail industry. Recently, Visual Thinking was asked to review their branch presentation guidelines, and to develop new VM materials and training tools to improve the support provided for their branch teams.
We reviewed all existing VM materials, and compiled a series of recommendations for improving the effectiveness and standards of product presentation, display and operational activities instore. To introduce the changes, we produced the Nuts & Bolts, a comprehensive branch operations manual. With detailed images and information, it has replaced all previous VM documents used. An intranet version also provides the content to office-based personnel to improve policy implementation across the business. To support the launch, we developed a training plan that was implemented by an internal team to maximise the established branch structures and working relationships. Since its introduction, the Nuts & Bolts project has been a great success. It means new stores are better equipped to deliver a consistent and effective application of VM policy and store teams in existing branches can raise the bar further, to improve the sector leading standards which John Lewis is proudly known for.
